Connecting Chapters is a program that equips high school FFA members to connect with elementary students and peers to increase agricultural literacy – awareness, knowledge, and appreciation – in their communities.

In the 2020-2021 school year, participating chapters will:

  1. Complete an online agricultural literacy training.
  2. Read and donate a book to an elementary classroom.
  3. Plan and lead one agricultural literacy activity in their school.
  4. Connect with their local County Farm Bureau to learn more about Farm Bureau.
  5. Submit a video about their Connecting Chapters experience.

All program materials and training are provided at no cost.

The work of this program is supported in part by the National Agriculture in the Classroom grant no. 2017-38858 from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture.

Sign up for the 2021-2022 school year will open April 7, 2021 during the Nebraska FFA State Convention.

Task 2: Read and Donate

To Complete the Task:

  1. Read the book Tales of a Dairy Godmother in a classroom of your choice.
  2. Donate the book to the school library or classroom.
  3. Confirm your participation and submit a photo of your book reading experience.

Tip: Tales of a Dairy Godmother by Viola Butler is a great fit for Kindergarten – Second Grade classrooms.

Better Butter

  • You only need a few supplies and some willing helpers to make this treat! Pass the jar around to make your own butter.

Ice Cream in a Bag

  • Shake it up with a sweet treat! Use this recipe to make ice cream in a bag. Top ice cream with your favorite toppings!

Milk or Meat?

  • Students will identify the differences between beef and dairy cattle and determine the commodities produced by each type of cattle.

Task 3: Plan and Lead One Agricultural Literacy Activity

Choose one activity from your Connecting Chapters binder and a classroom of your choice to complete task three!

Tip: Wear your FFA jacket or t-shirt when leading the activity! A great time to do this would be FFA Week or National Ag Week in March!

Task 4: Partner with Your Local County Farm Bureau

An ongoing task for FFA chapters is to receive mentorship and support from local County Farm Bureau leaders. In response to current social distancing guidelines, events will not be encouraged this year. Instead, a successful year in the Connecting Chapters program will result in the FFA chapter and County Farm Bureau leader connecting so FFA leaders can learn more about the local Farm Bureau activity.

The County Farm Bureau contact’s role in this partnership is to serve as a liaison between the county Farm Bureau and FFA chapter, specifically to:

  1. Arrange a meeting between the county Farm Bureau and FFA chapter.
  2. Facilitate a conversation about the work of the County Farm Bureau.

FFA Chapters have been asked to reach out to their County Farm Bureau contact by January 15th to arrange a meeting prior to February 26th.

Task 5: Submit a Video about Your Connecting Chapters Experience

New for the 2020-2021 school year, current FFA chapter participants are asked to develop a video documenting their year in the Connecting Chapters program. We ask that FFA chapters complete this video by May 30, 2021 and email to courtneys@nefb.org and their County Farm Bureau Contact.

What should the video look like?

Directions

  • At least four students should appear in the video.
  • The video should be 5-10 minutes long.
  • Props and visual aids are encouraged.
    • For example: Use photos of you leading an activity in the classroom, hold up the resources you used in your activities, or create a graphic to show how many students you reached in the program.
